First-year Student

You are considered a first-year student if you are a high school senior, in early college, or haven't attended college since graduating high school.

Deadlines

App State will review first-year applications on a rolling basis. Students can expect to receive an admission decision within 2-4 weeks after submitting their complete application and supplemental materials.

 Apply by Nov. 15 and submit all supplemental materials by Nov. 30 to guarantee consideration for most university scholarships.

Application Requirements

We want to learn about who you are, what you are passionate about and how App State can help make your ambitions a reality.

  1. Complete an application (apply using the Common Application)
  2. Provide your official high school transcript(s)
  3. Submit $65 application fee (or approved fee waiver(non-refundable) 
  4. Submit official or self-reported SAT (school code: 5010) or ACT (school code: 3062) scores. Review test score requirements
  5. Complete your FAFSA (application opens in Dec.; school code: 002906)

Recommended Materials

In addition to your application, you have the opportunity to provide an interest statement and list of activities to help us get to know you beyond your grades. Submit these materials in the Common Application or your MyMountaineer Portal.

Other ways to become a Mountaineer

Bridge to Appalachian

Bridge to Appalachian is an invitation only, one-year pathway for students who were denied admissions as a first-year student and enroll at a North Carolina community college before they complete their degree at App State.

Aspire Appalachian

Aspire Appalachian is a seamless two-year pathway for students enrolled at partner community colleges to complete their degree at App State.

GEAR UP Guarantee

GEAR UP is a guaranteed admissions program for students currently attending a GEAR UP high school. To qualify, students must meet the admission requirements and application deadlines. Learn more today!

 

Scholarships

Each year, App State awards an average of $25 million to students based on need, as well as academic and athletic achievement, and enrolls hundreds of students into Selective Academic Programs. Scholarships are available to new, transfer and returning students and provide varying awards ranging from partial to full institutional costs.

  • November 15: Submit an application for admission
  • November 30: Submit additional prompt(s) in your MyMountaineer Portal for the Chancellor Scholarship (and admission to the Honors College), Beaver College of Health Sciences Scholarships and Reich College of Education Scholarships.

The Hickory Scholarship is a one-time scholarship given to students who meet the academic requirements and enroll at App State's Hickory campus. No scholarship application is required.

The Appalachian Excellence Scholarships (AES) are awarded to top first-year students with a strong academic record. You are automatically considered for this one-time scholarship if you apply for admission by Nov. 15.

All applicants will have access to the MyMountaineer Portal once your application is submitted. This is where you will receive information regarding your application, including any missing application materials and your admission decision.
