The App State Experience — whether it's in Boone, Hickory or online — creates opportunities that last a lifetime. To better understand the application requirements, first determine your student type.

Transfer applicant

You are considered a transfer applicant if you have graduated from high school and are a military service member or veteran. 

If you are applying as a transfer studentcomplete the application requirements listed below.

First-year applicant

You are considered a first-year applicant if you are a dependent of a military service member and a current high school senior or haven't attended college since graduating from high school, including early college applicants. Learn more about how to apply as a first-year student.

Application Requirements

We want to learn about who you are, what you are passionate about and how App State can help make your ambitions a reality. 

  1. Complete an application (apply using the Transfer Application) Application fee is waived for military students.
  2. Submit an official transcript from each institution you have attended
  3. Submit your official final high school/secondary school transcript
    Required for students planning to use Veterans Affairs education benefits. They will not be used for admissions review if you have 24 or more transferable college credit coursework.
  4. Submit official test scores
    Not required for students with at least 3 years of active duty or if you are 23 years of age or older.
  5. Submit a copy of your DD214 or most current Leave and Earnings Statement (if active duty)
  6. Submit an official copy of your Joint Services Transcript and/or Air Force University Transcript
  7. Complete your FAFSA (application opens Oct. 1; school code: 00296)
  8. Submit a resume that includes your military experience
  9. Submit a personal statement that includes information on your military service and academic interests.

Dates and Deadlines

We recommend you apply at least four months prior to the start of your intended term for access to scholarship opportunities, the application for Boone campus housing, class registration and more.

Suggested dates to apply

  • Spring Admission: Oct. 15
  • Summer/Fall Admission Deadline to be considered to scholarships/on-campus housing: Feb. 1
  • Scholarship Deadline: Mar. 1
  • Fall Admission: May 15
Applications received after the deadline — for Boone, Hickory and online — will be reviewed on a rolling basis as long as space is still available.

Benefits & Aid

If you or your parent served in the military, you may be eligible for Veterans Affairs education benefits. While attending App State, a dedicated VA benefits specialist will help you navigate the process. Learn more about military and veteran benefits at App State.

Scholarship opportunities are set aside exclusively for incoming transfer students. Students must be entering in the fall term to be eligible.

The North Carolina Military and Veterans Affairs also offers North Carolina Veterans and Dependents Scholarships.
