Non-degree seeking students are individuals who do not plan to receive a degree from App State. The coursework cannot be used for admission to undergraduate or graduate degree programs. Applicants who are not accepted as a degree-seeking first-year, transfer or graduate student are not eligible for non-degree status. Non-degree students may take a maximum of 18 hours each semester. Because this classification is designed for students taking courses purely for their edification, academic advisors are not assigned.

Non-degree applicants can apply to App State via the non-degree application. After submitting an application, applicants will receive an email with login information for the MyMountaineer portal. Non-degree applicants are accepted on a space-available basis and are encouraged to apply as early as possible.
- Complete the 2027 Application
- Pay a non-refundable application fee of $65
- Submit an official copy of your high school transcript (if you are unable to provide an official high school transcript, an official transcript from another college/university is acceptable)
- Complete conduct review (if selected)

Additional Information
- If a student applies close to the start of the term, course seats may be limited and there may not be enough time to submit prerequisite documentation or receive departmental approval.
- Allow sufficient time for materials to be reviewed and for registration access to be granted.
- If an application deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, it will automatically move to the next business day.

Registration for Non-Degree Seeking Students
- Establish App State credentials using the assigned student ID and username
- Register for courses during the assigned registration window through AppalNet. This step-by-step instructions guide will show you how to begin searching for classes.
- Some courses require a departmental course permit and / or successful completion of specific prerequisite(s). As a result, non-degree students may be asked by the department teaching the course to provide transcripts, course descriptions, or syllabi for departmental review.
- Appalachian State does not add transfer / prerequisite coursework to the records of non-degree seeking students. Students should call or email the department or instructor of record if they have questions about a course permit or prerequisite requirement(s).
- If you are currently enrolled in high school, you must provide the appropriate permissions from the high school counselor, a parent/guardian, AND faculty member from course(s) for which you seek to register.
- If you are seeking joint enrollment, you must provide approval to attend Appalachian and proof of good standing in writing from your home institution.
After registration, billing notifications will be available in the AppalNet portal.
