More Than a Location

Our beautiful setting is more than a location – it profoundly shapes how our community lives, works and learns together. Our commitment to sustainability is a tradition, not a trend, and Appalachian is an active steward of North Carolina’s interconnected financial, cultural and natural resources.

This commitment shows in many ways, including our tuition rates, textbook rental program, commitment to energy efficiency, economic viability and equitable citizenship. Because of this and much more, Appalachian ranks No. 5 out of 610 schools in MyPlan.com's 2017 student rankings for "Overall Satisfaction & Happiness with Choice."

Community and Civic Engagement

Appalachian is recognized nationally in the areas of community and civic engagement and service-learning. The intersection of classroom learning and real-world experience is a powerful combination.  This work sets us apart from other institutions and leads us all to value how our lives, no matter our professions, can become more meaningful by serving others. Appalachian’s commitment to service is evidenced across campus and beyond, which led to a recent community engagement classification by the Carnegie Foundation.

Life-changing Involvement

If you are the kind of student who wants to get involved, there is no better place. Whether you want to get involved in Greek Life, join the ski team, become a social justice educator, sing a capella, help plan a diversity celebration or help preserve the Blue Ridge Parkway, there are more than 400 clubs and organizations for undergraduate and graduate students.

A Sustainable Way of Life

An ethic of sustainability resounds through campus and Boone, as evident through an electricity-generating wind turbine, a commitment to making new buildings efficiently designed and LEED® certified, a biodiesel-powered public transportation system, and research and academic programs that focus on energy and the environment.

Challenging Academics

From the moment you join the Appalachian community, you will be challenged to “discover why,” to thoughtfully consider contexts, and conduct and analyze research in and beyond your area of scholarship.

Appalachian offers more than 150 programs through its College of Arts and Sciences, College of Fine and Applied Arts, Reich College of Education, Walker College of Business, Hayes School of Music, Beaver College of Health Sciences and Cratis D. Williams School of Graduate Studies.

Wellness, Health and Safety

A safe and healthy environment is key to your ability to focus on your education. Appalachian brings a holistic approach to wellness, and as you navigate the challenges of student life, there are many dedicated people and excellent resources on our campus.

Additionally, Appalachian’s Office of Student Research provides more than $100,000 in grants each year to support their undergraduate research. The opportunity to work alongside a professor on a research project goes beyond instruction and gives valuable experience for jobs and graduate school.
