Welcome to the 4th edition of the 2022-2023 year for “The Mountaineer Inclusive”! In this edition, we will take a look at how students celebrated the end of the semester,  recognized diversity around campus, and continued to grow their communities.

Transfer Admissions & Engagement

Transfer Admissions and Engagement celebrated App State's transfer students with their week of Transfer Madness.

They also hosted Transfer Pre-Orientation Program (T-POP) for newly admitted Summer/Fall 2023 students! This day-long in-person event allowed transfers that attend to get a jump on their success by gaining access to course registration and advising ahead of new students; connect with other new transfer students; and learn about housing, student employment, engagement, and much more!

Diversity Celebration

The Diversity Celebration is a month-long showcase where diverse perspectives, cultures and values are accepted, appreciated and celebrated. This annual event is open to the entire Appalachian community to not only showcase but also celebrate! From showcasing different cuisines that celebrate identity and sustainability, film screening of diverse stories and perspectives, and seminars with prominent voices. This year’s celebration was truly a way to connect through food, poetry, film, art, music, and community!

Asian Student Association (ASA)

ASA strives to explore Asian identity, leadership, and personal development through friendships, programs, and opportunities. We are dedicated to building connections among the AAPI community as well as between people of all cultures and ethnicities on campus. Asianfest 2023: Luck of the Draw! Was Hosted this month with special guest, filmmaker len Chi. This month they have been hosting their Library Study Nights for their member to relax, hang out, and study together and they also hosted their 2nd hangout at High Country Lanes.

Black Student Association (BSA)

Our mission is to actively make a change for unity by encouraging the principles of scholarship, leadership, cultural uplift, diversity, and community service. In addition, BSA is committed to promoting a positive image at Appalachian State University and the black community at large. 

BSA spent this month collaborating multiple organizations on not only giving back to the High Country and hosting seminars. The hosted a Roadside Clean Up with the members  Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated and with the lovely ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated hosted a public speaking seminar with the High Country Toastmasters.

Hillel

Hillel is a student-based organization that provides students with the opportunity to learn more about the Jewish faith and culture. Hillel also welcomes non-Jewish students to our organization. We socialize, celebrate Jewish holidays and culture, and act as the Jewish voice on our campus and in the community.

App State Hillel had an eventful month! They hosted their shabbat services while hosting their annual Hamantaschen Baking for Purim. During this month they hosted A Day Against Hate with AEPi, Intercultural Student Affairs & the Center for Judaic, Holocaust, and Peace Studies here on Campus.

Latin Hispanic Alliance (LHA)

The Latin Hispanic Alliance is dedicated to promoting awareness of Latin and Hispanic culture on Appalachian State's campus and in Boone, North Carolina. This is an organization for people who are of Latin and/or Hispanic origin AND for people who appreciate Latin and Hispanic culture.

The Latin Hispanic Alliance has also been working with BSA and our Greek Councils to host events across campus. Their Black and Brown mixer was hosted with the members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. and Lambda Sigma Upsilon Latino Fraternity Inc. and recently hosted their agua fresca fundraiser!

LGBTQ Center

Many amazing activities and events are happening at the Henderson Springs LGBTQ Center as well as plenty of educational content provided on the LGBTQ+ Center Instagram (@lgbtcenter_appstate).

The Henderson Spring LGBTQ Center hosting multiple on going events for Pride Week! From workshop to picnics, students were able to connect with graduate students and professionals and later, close the week with crafting at Club Hub!

Queen In You (QIY)

Queen In You (QIY) is an organization of young professional and collegiate students who dedicate their time to push toward the advancement of colored women. The purpose is to connect & join with a surrounding elementary, middle, and or high school to mentor young girls and the social well-being of its members through participation in organizational activities such as community service, full body meetings, fundraising, and social events.

Along with general meetings, Queen Week hosted all kinds of events including career development, service days, and participating in Black Student Preview Day! The Queens will also be hosting their Black Out Black Tie Red Carpet Ball very soon!

Scholars with Divers Aabilities Program (SDAP)

The Scholars with Diverse Abilities Program Best Buddies Chapter strives to develop partnerships for inclusion. We create meaningful and fun events for students and adults with and without intellectual/physical disabilities. 

This month SDAP hosted the Best Buddies Game and Paint Nights for their members and had tons of fun connected with their members right before spring break! We can’t wait to see what fun event they have up next!

Student American Indian Movement (SAIM)

The Student American Indian Movement is a new organization that will connect Native and other Indigenous students on campus together to create a home away from home and an inclusive environment for free expression. They hosted 2023 Selu Lecture with special guest Former Chief Joyce Dugan of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indian on our campus.


Fraternity and Sorority Events

National Pan-Hellenic Council & Multicultural Greek Council

The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) serves as the governing council for nine historically African American fraternities and sororities, seven of which are currently represented at Appalachian State University. Each semester, the council sponsors campus-wide events such as NPHC Week, the homecoming Step Show and spring Stroll-Off. The Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) are organizations that make up the council are Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Incorporated and Lambda Sigma Upsilon Latino Fraternity, Incorporated. The purpose of MGC is to provide a council for Greek organizations that contribute specifically to diversity and inclusion on our campus.

NPHC hosted their Into The Woods Ball and their spring Party Hop where students have to have fun and connect with other organizations on campus!

The Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated hosted some amazing events focusing on building businesses and creating community! The ladies had a fun event at Revolution Boone Cycling Studio in Boone and hosted their Let’s Talk Business Pink Table Talk where they discussed professional etiquette and resources available to start now!

The Mu Omicron Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was rechartered in November of 2015 on Appalachian State's campus. The sorority's founding principles are Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood, all of which the chapter's members hold dear to their hearts.
