Spring is Warming Up
Welcome to the 3rd edition of the 2022-2023 year for “The Mountaineer Inclusive”! In this edition, we will take a look at the many ways our campus organizations celebrated student identity, Black History Month, Valentines Day and more during the start of the spring semester.

Admissions Events
Our Spring Open House is on April 1 and is the perfect time to explore everything our Boone campus has to offer. You can also check out our visit page for other upcoming events.
Transfer Admissions & Engagement
Watch for more details this spring about virtual student veteran admitted student sessions, which will be available in late March and early April. These events will allow student veterans to find out more about the admitted student process and to speak to folks in admissions, financial aid, and the student veteran center.
Club and Org Events
Asian Student Association (ASA)
ASA strives to explore Asian identity, leadership, and personal development through friendships, programs, and opportunities. ASA is dedicated to building connections among the AAPI community as well as between people of all cultures and ethnicities on campus. Some of the events ASA is hosting include: study nights in the library every Tuesday night to hang out and study with friends as well as game nights where students can bring different board games or any game to play with!
Black Student Association (BSA)
The Black Student Association held different events throughout Black History Month, which takes place from February 1 - March 1. Throughout the month, BSA worked on many collaborations with many different Black organizations. To begin Black History Month, BSA hosted a Paint and Sip, where students can paint and destress themselves. They also hosted Black Trivia in collaboration with Pi Nu chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. This trivia game night was focused on Black culture! BSA also hosted a networking event for students to make connections — especially with the people around you who look like you! BSA held their Black Excellence Awards at the end of February as a way to recognize and celebrate black-identifying students, faculty, and organizations.
Hillel is a student-based organization that provides students with the opportunity to learn more about the Jewish faith and culture. Hillel also welcomes non-Jewish students to our organization. We socialize, celebrate Jewish holidays and culture, and act as the Jewish voice on our campus and in the community.
The Latin Hispanic Alliance is dedicated to promoting awareness of Latin and Hispanic culture on Appalachian State's campus and in Boone, North Carolina. This is an organization for people who are of Latin and/or Hispanic origin AND for people who appreciate Latin and Hispanic culture. One of their big events for February was A Taste of Latin America, which shared the wonderful traditional platters across Latin America as well as celebrate the different cultures. Students were allowed to bring snacks from different Latin American countries.
Many amazing activities and events happened at the Henderson Springs LGBTQ Center! As well as activities, there is plenty of educational content provided on the LGBTQ+ Center Instagram (@lgbtcenter_appstate).
In February, the LGBTQ center hosted several events throughout the month. One of the events is Slopes at Beech Mountain, where students can go skiing at one of the resorts near Boone. Cookies, Coca, & Queers is a social event that occurs every 3rd Tuesday of the month! It is a great way to find community and connect with other LGBTQ+ folks at App State.
Queen In You is an organization of young professional and collegiate students who dedicate their time to push toward the advancement of colored women. The purpose is to connect & join with a surrounding elementary, middle, and or high school to mentor young girls and the social well-being of its members through participation in organizational activities such as community service, full body meetings, fundraising, and social events. In collaboration with BSA, Queen in You was taking donations for The Loveland Foundation, which specializes in making sure Black women and girls have access to therapy and other healing resources. With each donation given students would get a valentine's goodie bag.
Scholars with Divers Aabilities Program (SDAP)
The Scholars with Diverse Abilities Program Best Buddies Chapter strives to develop partnerships for inclusion. We create meaningful and fun events for students and adults with and without intellectual/physical disabilities. For February, one of the main events that SDAP hosted was their annual Valentine’s Dance to raise funds.
Student American Indian Movement (SAIM)
The Student American Indian Movement is a new organization that will connect Native and other Indigenous students on campus together to create a home away from home and an inclusive environment for free expression. This month a Lumbee Tribe flag was unveiled at the International Hallway inside the Plemmons Student Union, the Office of Diversity collaborated with SAIM to host the ceremony celebrating the new flag placed to honor the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina.
Fraternity and Sorority Events
National Pan-Hellenic Council & Multicultural Greek Council
The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) serves as the governing council for nine historically African American fraternities and sororities, seven of which are currently represented at Appalachian State University. Each semester, the council sponsors campus-wide events such as NPHC Week, the homecoming Step Show and spring Stroll-Off. The Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) are organizations that make up the council is Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Incorporated and Lambda Sigma Upsilon Latino Fraternity, Incorporated. The purpose of MGC is to provide a council for Greek organizations that contribute specifically to diversity and inclusion on our campus.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated
The Omicron Kappa Chapter ladies collected canned food items for the Hunger & Health Coalition food shelter here in Boone. They also had a table to write positive notes for students around campus!
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated
The extraordinary ladies of Zeta Phi Beta also hosted several events throughout February to celebrate Black History Month. One of the events held was game night in collaboration with BSA, another event held was aimed to raise awareness for American Heart Month. This event was to learn a healthy recipe and learn different ways to promote heart health!
